December
2005
There were only two
letter writers this month with abundant findings
on the internet. The first was Kathleene Parker,
who has written many letters to many magazines
and newspapers on subjects relating to the
environment and the American Southwest. The most
notable letter writer was Carolyn Porco, the
Cassini Imaging team leader at the
CICLOPS/Space Science center.

October
2005
The October edition of
Discover had a couple of notable letter writers.
The most controversial was Dr. Ralph G. Walton
who disagrees with the below noted article
supporting the safety of aspartame. In the
letter he refers to a study he had published
which is linked below. This came with a somewhat
neutral reply from the editors and another
reply, at the request of Dicsover, from
D. Eric Walters who refutes the claim that
aspartame is unsafe.

The notable letter writer for this month was
Charles Tart who wrote in to defend himself
after the article, "Extreme States" in the July
2005 issue. As a result of my research, I found
that Tart is a well known, highly published
individual in the field of consciousness
research (that is not to say that I necessarily
agree with what little I know of his work). The
editors of Discover did issue an apology with
the printing of the letter.

August 2005
Only two letter writers from the August issue
had any substantial findings from the search
engines. The most interesting was Stephen
Czerkas. In his letter, he disputes an article's
claim (see below) that dromaeosaurs could not
fly. This is followed by a biting reply from
Mark Norell of the American Museum of Natural
History. Czerkas has acheived greater noteriety
for a couple of other controversial issues. The
Wikipedia article on the forged fossil-Archeoraptor
and the Nature article give the best overview of
these subjects.

July
2005
The letters published in July's issue were all
either to praise or to criticize Alan Burdick's
article in the May issue, "The Truth About
Invasive Species". I have to assume that this
focus was because most of the letters received
by the magazine were about this controversial
subject. Interestingly, two of the letters were
attributed to multiple authors, and two
individuals in each group have also coauthored
books on invasive species.
